The Department of Geography at PN Campus began in 1962 when American Peace Corps Volunteer Peter Farquhar took initiation in geography teaching and another American Peace Corps Volunteer Dorothy Mierow involved in geography teaching since 1963. More substantial contribution was made by Prof. Dr. Madhav Prasad Tripathi from January 1963 to March 2009 who was appointed a faculty member to teach geography at the campus in 1967. Dr. Tripathi then initiated the department to strengthen and upgrade geography courses. In 1967 Bachelor’s Degree in geography started to run and in 1979 Master’s level geography teaching and research began.
During 1969-1970, Wasim Ahamed and Dipti Sribastav both geographers from India came to PN Campus to teach geography courses. In 1970, Prof. Dr. Birendra Singh Gurung joined the department. The Daksha Singh Barahi- Colombo Plan experts: Dr. Kishan Singh Rajpurohit, Prof Dr. Ujagir Singh, Washim Ahamad, and Radheshyam Mishra who were all from India served as geography instructors at the department.
Laboratory (GIS/RS/Cartographic)
The department is equipped with a surveying and cartographic laboratory, visual display portraits, a departmental library and a seminar hall. The Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) laboratory was established in this department with the financial support provided by Prof. Shunji Murai of the University of Tokyo, Japan in 1997. Since then, the department has been offering academic courses on GIS and RS for the Bachelor’s and Master’s level students of Geography.
